Join us for “Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives” March 26-30, 2013

Sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander American Student Alliance (A.P.A.S.A), HSU Diversity Program & Associated Students

“Who are ‘Asian Pacific Islanders’? What does being ‘Asian’ or ‘Asian Pacific Islander’ mean? Who are our communities of Asian Pacific Islanders here in Humboldt? What are our different experiences & stories?”
THAT’S WHAT PAN-ASIAN ISLANDER PERSPECTIVES IS ALL ABOUT! Be a part of it!
The weeklong event sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander American Student Alliance (A.P.A.S.A.) will gather together, on one common calendar, different events around pan-Asian Pacific Islander (pan-API) ethnicity happening both on- & off-campus events, & share pan-API resources in Humboldt. Performances, workshops, movies, lectures, art showings, classes, or resources like stores or community services.
Our goals for the festival are to:

  • Create spaces for participants to tell their stories about what it means to be Asian, Asian American, South Asian, & Pacific Islanders in their own voices, and engage in dialogue with those who do not identify as such about their perspectives too of what “Asian” means.
  • Increase awareness & appreciation of the diversity that exists within our group & work in solidarity to engage our differences.
  • Form alliances with other groups & in the local community.
We invite YOU and your organization to create & post your own pan-API event or activity on the Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives calendar!
  • Organize your own special event around pan-API ethnicity to occur during the celebration, for example, film screening, performance, panel discussion, workshop.
  • Submit a piece to this online Zine, for example, writing, photos, art, poetry, music.
  • Create an art installation in your own space, for example, place of business, classroom, school.
  • List your pan-API business/service in the online Zine
  • Attend the events & enjoy, once the calendar is published in March!!
Contact A.P.A.S.A. by February 1, 2013 if you are interested in submitting to the Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives calendar at apasa@humboldt.edu.

We hope that you will consider leveraging this festival to coincide with any activities you might be coordinating in the spring. For example, a business could work with artists to display an art installation in their place of business, or attend the events as part of employee development around diversity, or submit pieces to the Zine. Another example could be that a school classroom integrates the festival into coursework, such as attending events, submitting pieces to the Zine, or create art in their school. It’s up to you to decide how you want to participate in the way that best meets your needs for your organization and as individuals.

We are extending the invitation to the community at large as well as the HSU community to encourage collaboration between the on & off-campus community. Humboldt County can sometimes be less welcoming to residents & students of color, & also not necessarily very cognizant of our community. We invite you to join us in recognizing the diverse experiences of Asians, Asian Americans, South Asians, & Pacific Islanders in Humboldt.
